Harlow Carr
Year One enjoyed their school trip to Harlow Carr where we did a Signs of the Seasons workshop. They walked around the beautiful grounds and found many signs. They noticed that the leaves were changing colour and falling off the trees. They noticed that the weather was starting to feel colder and the mornings and nights were getting darker. The children collected leaves and also seeds from around the gardens and thought about the type of animals they might see in Autumn.
During the month of October Year One enjoyed taking part in African Dancing and learning about Maya Angelou.
Year One enjoyed dressing up as Victorians for the 125th school birthday. It was lovely to hear from lots of past pupils and learning all about what St Mary’s was like in the past.
A great start to the day, Year One enjoyed getting out in the fresh air and learning how to play golf. They are also loving the Olympic after school club lots of them are attending.

Phonics Links
Towards the end of Year One the children will sit a phonics screening check. The phonics screening check is a quick and easy check of your child’s phonics knowledge. It helps the school confirm whether your child has made the expected progress. The check consists of a list of 40 words, half real words and half nonsense words, the nonsense words will be shown to your child with a picture of an alien. Nonsense words are important to include as they can’t be read using their vocabulary or from memory; they have to use their decoding skills. This is a fair way to assess all children’s ability to decode.
