Transition To Secondary School

At St Mary's Horsforth, the majority of our children go to St Mary's Menston . We work closely with St Mary's Menston to start this process early with activities starting from Year 4.

In Year 4 the children take part in PE sessions at St Mary's Menston with other feeder primary schools.

In Year 5, the children access art, drama, technology and science sessions as part of be creative sessions. In Year 5 they also take part in a maths mystery session at The Royal Armouries with the other feeder primary schools with a focus on problem solving.

In Year 6 the children have activities such as the Big Read, where they take part in an online reading workshop but also have visits from the staff at St Mary's Menston to hear about the school, attend the open day and take part in transition sessions. The transition day for the current Year 6 is on 3rd July 2025.

We work closely with St Mary's Menston to ensure a careful transition for all children particularly our children with SEND who have additional sessions at the school.

At St Mary's Menston, students are given opportunities to meet their teachers, start to build their friendships and to get to know their new environments long before their first day.  And, of course, there are lots of opportunities to asks questions.

Parents are welcomed to school through regular communication, an information evening, and an informal coffee morning where they meet our Student Managers, and pupils who have journeyed on the same path as their children.

Staff from feeder schools and secondary schools in the Trust meet regularly and ensure that our curricular are aligned and we build on the work which pupils have completed in their previous school.

St Mary's Menston next open day is in September 2025  and further information/booking will become available on  their Open events and tours page.  If you are unable to make the next event or have other specific questions you may also request an onsite tour of the school via the same page.
